New Metro Area Definitions
The President’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has issued its revised definitions of Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) and other geographic definitions that form the basis for how the U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and many other statistical agencies present data.
OMB comprehensively reviews these geographic definitions once a decade (in connection with the decennial census), with periodic updates in the interim. There are now 388 MSAs, compared with the slightly more than 370 previously.
See OMB Bulletin 13-01, “Revised Delineations of Metropolitan Statistical Areas, Micropolitan Statistical Areas, and Combined Statistical Areas, and Guidance on Uses of the Delineations of These Areas” (152 pp.). The new definitions take effect immediately.
The main OMB site for Metropolitan Statistical Area definitions and guidance is at OMB Statistical Programs and Standards. ETA has provided an understandable explanation of Geographical Economic and Employment Data, including a podcast and transcript.
